Mariel Barnes is an Assistant Professor at the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs. Her research primarily explores how social policies impact domestic and intimate partner violence in highly industrialized countries. Mariel received her Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University in 2021, and previously, a M.A. (Hons) from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. (Hons) from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. She is a founding faculty member of UW-Madison’s Sexual Violence Research Initiative, and a faculty affiliate of European Studies, the Institute for Research on Poverty, and the Institute for Diversity Science.
